Kenyan Court Orders Compensation for Family Of Murdered Pakistani Journalist

A court ruling in Kenya on Monday ordered the Kenyan government to pay 10 million shillings ($78,300) to the family of a Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif, who was shot dead by police in Nairobi in 2022.

Sharif, a popular TV journalist who fled Pakistan due to threats against his life, was killed in October 2022.

Kenyan officials said his death was a case of mistaken identity, claiming police were searching for car thieves and opened fire on Sharif’s vehicle when he failed to stop at a roadblock.

However, a fact-finding team from Pakistan investigated the incident and concluded in a 600-page report that Sharif’s murder was pre-planned. The team had reconstructed the crime scene and examined Sharif’s phones and computers.

In October, Sharif’s widow, Javeria Siddique, sued Kenya’s police’s paramilitary General Service Unit for wrongly killing her husband.

Sharif had left Pakistan after the government filed several treason cases against him, one of which accused him of inciting mutiny in the armed forces through his reporting. Sharif denied the accusations.
