Tanzania has received two new electric multiple-unit (EMU) trains to modernise and expand its railway system.
These new trains are part of the 10 locomotives and coaches the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) purchased from Hyundai Rotem Company in South Korea.
The trains, which consist of eight carriages each, will begin service on the new route between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma starting July 25, 2024.
Meanwhile, an express train service between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro will begin this Friday, offering more travel options for passengers. This particular train service will cut the travel time from four hours by bus to one hour 40 minutes by train.
Each set of the 10 locomotives purchased by TRC can carry up to 589 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour.
According to The Citizen, this latest train arrival brings the total of EMU trains in Tanzania to three, with the first set arriving in April and currently undergoing trials.
