A fake bill proposing to restructure Nigeria into “regional ethnic nationalities” is being circulated on Social media, especially X.
The purported bill suddenly emanated from nowhere and went viral, provoking conversations about the possibility of regional administrations and a six-year term for the President.
The bill is titled: “A Bill for an Act to Substitute the Annexure to Decree 24 of 1999 with a New Governance Model for the Federal Republic of Nigeria” and has the country’s coat of Arms as letterhead.
Part of the bill reads: “The term of office of the President shall be six years. No person shall be elected President for more than two terms.
It also proposes thus: “Nigeria shall be a Federation comprising of Regional Territories and a Federal Capital Territory and shall be a Republic to be known by the name of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The territorial jurisdiction of Nigeria shall comprise the territory of the Regional members of the Federation, and its boundaries shall be as determined by international agreements.”
How it circulated reeks of propaganda, typical of the ruling party.
The document has been linked to a pro-Yoruba group, Afenifere, which is clamouring for a restructuring of the country.
Meanwhile, the document has been dismissed by the Presidency.
