Following the tragic death of Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui on May 22, 2024, near the summit of Mt. Everest, his family has decided to leave his body on the mountain he so deeply cherished.

Cheruiyot, who fell into a crevasse just 48 meters from Everest’s summit, was an avid mountaineer with a profound love for the peaks.

His family said in a press release that after extensive consultations and careful consideration, they have determined that retrieving his body from such a problematic height would pose significant risks to rescue teams.

They emphasised that they do not wish to endanger any lives in the recovery effort.

Joshua deeply loved the mountains, and they loved him in return. We find solace in knowing he rests in his happy place, the family stated.

Cheruiyot’s passing has elicited an outpouring of condolences from relatives, friends, and the outdoor community.

The family extended their heartfelt thanks, notably to the KCB Group, where Joshua was employed, for their immense support during this difficult time.

They also acknowledged Seven Summit Treks, the expedition organiser, for their continued support, information, and guidance.

The family expressed their sympathies for Nawang Sherpa’s family, the Sherpa who accompanied Cheruiyot and remains missing. “May they find peace,” they added.

Memorial services to honour Cheruiyot’s life will be held in Nairobi and his hometown, Chester Village.
