The Kano State House of Assembly, on Thursday, dissolved the four emirate councils established by the administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

This decision followed discussions during the House’s plenary session, in which the Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Bill was reviewed and passed after its second and third readings.

Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu argued that repealing the law would restore Kano’s former prestige, which was diminished when the emirate was divided into five.

The Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Dala noted that the additional emirates had disrupted the traditional cultural custodianship of the original Kano Emirate. The amendment abolished the four new emirate councils, reinstating the sole Kano Emirate.

The House also approved a motion to establish a new second-class emirate council in the state.

This development could potentially lead to the reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. Sanusi was dethroned by Ganduje’s administration, which had divided the Kano emirate into five.

Recall that last year, former Kano governor and Kwankwasiyya movement leader, Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, expressed the intention of his party to revisit issues surrounding the Kano emirates.

Following the New Nigerian Peoples Party’s victory in last year’s election, Kwankwaso indicated that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration would review the emirate’s division and Sanusi’s dethronement.
