Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, on Wednesday, said the number one measure of a country’s development is investing in healthcare.

Obi said this on his official X account after attending the Saving Little Hearts Programme hosted by Hospitals for Humanity at the Cardiocare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Abuja.

He said statistics show that one in 100 live births in Nigeria results in congenital heart defects, affecting approximately 50,000 children annually.

He stated that according to Dr Segun Ajayi of the Hospital For Humanity, only an abysmal 300 to 500, or a maximum of 1%, receive treatment.

This is very low compared to developed nations, where over 80% receive treatment, and even other developing countries have much higher percentages,” Obi said, further stating that “these low treatment rates result in multiple deaths, underscoring the urgent need for increased awareness, funding, and access to quality healthcare.

He added, “It was heartwarming to visit the different wards and witness the life-saving surgeries performed by Hospitals for Humanity in Abuja.

“I have always believed that investing in healthcare is the number one measure of a country’s development.

Obi commended the hospital for their decade-long commitment to providing voluntary and free-of-charge healthcare services, including numerous surgeries.

Pledging to support the hospital and calling on governments at all levels as well as affluent Nigerians to do the same, Obi said, “In the future, I intend to support their goal of reaching 150 successful cases each year in my small way.

I urge governments at all levels and wealthy Nigerians to also support them and do more for healthcare in our country.
