REPORT: Nigeria Customs Removes Controller Ejigbunu After FIJ Stories

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has removed Hussein Ejigbunu, the Controller of Federal Operations, from the Ikeja Zone A Unit in Lagos.

In replacement, Ejigbunu has been redeployed to Customs Headquarters, Abuja, with Kola Oladeji, the former Coordinator of Borders Drill Sector 4, northwest Axis, reassigned to take over the position vacated by Ejigbunu.

Also, Ahmadu Shuaib, Controller of Ogun 1 Area Commander of the NCS, has been redeployed to head the Federation Operations Unit (FOU) in the Kaduna Command for James Ojo’s replacement.

This follows a series of investigations published by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and follow-up tweets conducted by its founder, ‘Fisayo Soyombo.

In response to the allegations, the NCS has planned an extensive social media campaign, intending to post over 15,000 tweets to refute the claims.

Yet the NCS was exposed in a Group WhatsApp screenshot, which revealed the agency’s silence as confirmation to FIJ investigative reports on smuggling activities, with a critical player identified as Ibrahim Dende.

While the law enforcement agencies were not moved nor arrested the perpetrators, FIJ reportedly note that the NCS redeployment of Ejigbunu and Shuaib was discreetly to avoid media attention.
