Activist Urges Government Action Against MultiChoice’s Subscription Price Hikes

Human rights activist Francis Nwapa has urged the Nigerian government to intervene and halt MultiChoice’s frequent subscription rate increases for its GoTv and DStv packages in Nigeria. The call comes in response to a customer email announcing new prices set to take effect on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

According to the email, both new subscribers and existing customers renewing their packages will be affected by the price adjustments. MultiChoice cited the continuous rise in production costs in the country as the reason behind the fresh hike.

The subscription fees for packages on both platforms have been increased by approximately 20% to 26%. For example, the DStv Premium Package will now cost N37,000, up from the previous N29,500, while the Compact Plus package will increase from N19,800 to N25,000.

Similarly, GOtv package prices have also been adjusted. The Supa+ package will now cost N15,700, up from N12,500, and the Supa package will increase from N7,600 to N9,600.

In the email signed by MultiChoice CEO John Ugbe, the company explained that the price adjustments would enable them to deliver more quality content to subscribers nationwide.

Reacting to the price increases, Nwapa took to social media to express his displeasure, highlighting that

MultiChoice has raised prices five times between 2023 and now without implementing a ‘pay as you view’ system. He called for Nigerians to boycott MultiChoice services to protest the latest increment.
