Army Dismisses Soldiers for Stealing Armoured Cables at Dangote Refinery

The Nigerian Army has dismissed Corporal Innocent Joseph and Lance Corporal Jacob Gani over their involvement in the theft of armoured cables at the Dangote petroleum refinery in Lagos.

Last Wednesday, the Nigerian Army detained the two soldiers following allegations that they stole armoured cables at the Dangote refinery.

Describing the incident as “totally unacceptable and highly regrettable,” Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu said the soldiers’ alleged involvement in theft did not reflect the ethics and values of the Nigerian Army.

In a statement on Monday, Nwachukwu revealed that the soldiers were summarily tried and found guilty of charges under the Armed Forces Act CAP A20. They were charged with “Failure to Perform Military Duties” and other civil offences related to their unauthorised possession of materials.

The incident occurred when the soldiers, hired by a contractor, were apprehended at the refinery’s main gate with 897 armoured cables. Despite being given the opportunity to defend themselves, they were found guilty during the trial.

Both soldiers were dismissed from the army with immediate effect and handed over to relevant authorities for further prosecution.

Commenting on the incident, Nwachukwu said: “As a demonstration of NA’s zero-tolerance for misconduct and criminality within its ranks, the two soldiers have been dismissed from NA with immediate effect and handed over to relevant authorities for further prosecution.

“This decisive action underscores the NA’s resoluteness in maintaining its institutional integrity and reputation. The Nigerian Army reassures the general public of its dedication to upholding integrity, discipline and accountability at all levels.

“We remain resolute in our duty to protect and serve the nation with honour and dignity.
