The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Freedom, Democracy, and Good Governance International Conference on the theme “Freedom, Democracy, and Good Governance: A View from Cabo Verde.”

According to a press release by the commission, the conference will be held on Sal Island in Cabo Verde on April 8th and 9th, 2024.

While the event aims to strengthen democratic institutions and enhance governance among global leaders and stakeholders, a significant feature of the conference remains the introduction of the Sal Declaration.

Sal Declaration is a manifesto emphasising a collective commitment to democracy and proposing new paths for international cooperation and governance improvement.

The statement read in part, “ECOWAS’s participation in this conference underscores its vital role in promoting democracy and governance principles.”

Meanwhile, the Sal Declaration was first announced at the 2023 Caucus of African Governors of the World Bank and IMF on July 8, 2023. It hopes to play a central role in the UK-African Investment Summit in London on 23-24 April 2024.
