The Senegalese people went to the polls on Sunday to elect the next 5th President of Senegal. Local reports indicated that Bassirou Miomaye Faye, the opposition leader, is leading with majority votes in the race after three years of turbulence and political crisis.

Mr Faye, a 44-year-old opposition figure, is a prominent member of the Pastef party, which is led by Ousmane Sonko. Both of them were incarcerated for ten days prior to the election, although an amnesty law was passed before their release.

“The population is choosing between continuation and rupture,” Mr Faye said after casting his vote, urging contenders to accept the winner when the votes are counted.

During the night, several of Faye’s opponents—including her lone female running mate, Anta Babacar Ngom—admitted defeat.

On Monday morning, the majority of newspaper headlines congratulated him on the notable voter interest trends that put him at the top of the ballot. With roughly 57% of the vote compared to Amadou Ba’s 31%, Faye is ahead in the polls.

Official results are anticipated within the coming days.
