Americans Protest House of Reps Bill To Ban TikTok Nationwide

317

The United States House of Representatives, on Wednesday, approved a significant bill that could result in the banning of TikTok across America. The legislation mandates ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of the popular social media platform, to sell its controlling stake within six months or face TikTok’s prohibition in the US.

While the bill secured broad support in a bipartisan vote, it must gain Senate’s approval and receive the president’s signature to become a law. US lawmakers have expressed persistent concerns regarding China’s influence over TikTok, highlighting the platform’s ownership as a potential national security threat.

Beijing-based ByteDance, established in 2012, is facing a challenging decision regarding the forced divestiture. The Chinese government opposed the bill, labelling it as a move that would “come back to bite the US.”

At a briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said:

“Although the United States has never found evidence that TikTok threatens US national security, it has not stopped suppressing TikTok. This kind of bullying behaviour that cannot win in fair competition disrupts companies’ normal business activity, damages the confidence of international investors in the investment environment, and damages the normal international economic and trade order.”

The legislation amplifies existing tensions between the two global powers, particularly in the realm of technology and international relations. Recall that China have, over the years, banned many American social media giants that tried to make it into the nation.

In response to the recent development, TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, emphasised the platform’s commitment to data security and independence from external manipulation. However, concerns persist regarding data sharing practices between TikTok’s US operations and ByteDance in China, as highlighted by recent investigative reports.

Ahead of the House vote, prominent lawmakers welcomed the bill as a safeguard against potential exploitation of TikTok user data by foreign adversaries. The Senate’s stance remains uncertain, however.

Outside the White House, demonstrators have voiced opposition to the potential ban, citing its adverse effects on US businesses and content creators. A protest was also held at the Capitol building in Washington DC. The fate of TikTok in the United States lies in the balance, however, as President Biden has promised to sign the bill once it gets to his office.
