Oliver Mbamara, a Nigerian-born Nollywood actor and producer based in the US, has expressed optimism about the Nigerian film industry’s potential to achieve global recognition similar to its music sector.

In an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica, Mbamara emphasised the need for industry stakeholders to put in the necessary efforts.

“Nollywood can compete globally like the music industry, but we have to put in the work,” Mbamara, also an administrative law judge, asserted. He highlighted Nigeria’s abundant creative talent and hoped for government support to harness it effectively.

Reflecting on the success of Nigerian music worldwide, Mbamara noted the initial scepticism surrounding its potential. He believed the film industry could replicate this success with dedication. Drawing parallels, he pointed out how Nigerian music now permeates New York clubs, showcasing the country’s ability to excel.

He cautioned actors against taking partisan stances in political matters, emphasising their influence on followers. He stressed the importance of providing balanced perspectives and educational choices to audiences.

“We should actively promote learning and informed decision-making among our followers,” he added, underscoring the responsibility of public figures in shaping societal discourse.
