EU, ECOWAS Discuss Security, Humanitarian Crisis in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, in conjunction with delegations from the Council of the EU-Africa Working Party (COAFR), created a joint meeting to strengthen its long-standing collaboration to enhance peace, security, and integration in West Africa.

In a joint meeting held on Tuesday, 27th of February 2024, the Vice-Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Ms. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, expressed the need for strategic collaboration between the ECOWAS and the European Union as a means to focus on the regional goals of stability and sustainable development in West Africa.

Today’s gathering is a testament to our joint commitment to fostering a peaceful, secure, and prosperous West Africa. Our collaboration with the European Union lays a solid groundwork for achieving these goals, reflecting our mutual dedication to the principles of sustainable development and regional cohesion,” she stated.

The COAFR Chair, H.E. Yamina GUEFRI, echoed the same commitment to unity while expressing gratitude for sparking a joint united front, especially in organising in-depth discussions on security and humanitarian crisis issues in the region.

We are honored to be part of this dialogue, which not only reaffirms our commitment to strengthening the EU-ECOWAS partnership but also provides a platform for discussing key regional issues and the outcomes of the recent ECOWAS summit. Our focus is on enhancing cooperation, sharing insights, and working together towards the common objectives of democracy, good governance, and economic development in West Africa,” she stated.

The gathering also discussed the Extraordinary Summit’s progress and ongoing activities, particularly in tackling security and humanitarian issues in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger.

With this meeting, the ECOWAS Commission and the European Union (E.U.) solidified their partnership to enhance peace, security, and integration in West African communities.
