The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists has firmly opposed the selection of Dr. Babajide Salako as Chairman of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, the association’s President, declared at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday that Salako’s appointment violates the legislation establishing the council. He urged President Bola Tinubu to rescind Salako’s appointment and nominate a suitably qualified individual.
Dr Ifeanyi pointed out that Salako does not meet the criteria outlined in Section 3, subsection 1(a) of the Act CAP (M25) LFN 2004, which stipulates that the chairman must be a certified Fellow of the council with at least five years of post-qualification experience. According to him, the appointment disregarded the provision that the President should appoint the chairman based on the minister’s recommendation from a list of names submitted by the council.
The association expressed astonishment at the blatant disregard for the law and demanded an investigation into Salako’s appointment by the National Assembly. They emphasised that such actions undermine the legislative process and demonstrate a disregard for established protocols.
Dr. Ifeanyi urged President Tinubu to rectify the error promptly by revoking Salako’s appointment and ensuring compliance with the law in selecting a replacement.
