Breaking: NUPRC Ordered to Relocate Some Depts to Lagos

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has received a directive to move part of its operations to Lagos.

The memo seen by West Africa Weekly, was signed by Dr Kelechi Onyekachi Ofoegbu on behalf of the commission. It stated that the relocation aims to enhance organisational efficiency, promote industry growth, and optimise office accommodation in Abuja.

Departments have also been tasked to identify units capable of independent operation with minimal supervision, with submissions due by February 23, 2024.
The Memo dated 14th February 2024 reads:

“In line with our objectives of improving organisational efficiency, driving industry growth, and managing office accommodation in Abuja, we are exploring the possibility of relocating certain units to Lagos.

“This initiative is driven by the need to enhance our service delivery, reduce operational costs, and make adequate utilisation of our assets in Lagos.

“Consequently, we are requesting that each Department identify and provide a list of units that can operate independently with minimal supervision.

“Submissions on the above are expected on or before the close of business on Friday, 23rd February 2024. This is submitted for your further necessary action, please.”

NUPRC directed to relocate some departments to Lagos

NUPRC directed the relocation of some departments to Lagos, this instruction follows the recent move of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters and some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria to Lagos.

“Decongestion” was given as the reason for moving these two key establishments to the already dense Lagos State.
Notably, the NUPRC is a critical commission. The commission oversees the safety and other regulations that relate to the exportation and importation of petroleum products into the country. They also manage the upstream and downstream sectors of Nigeria’s petroleum industry.

Recent relocations of key infrastructures from the nation’s capital to Lagos State by the Tinubu-led administration have left room for speculation.

One netizen reacted to the relocation orders saying, “Man is trying to make sure that after his presidency he will still be in control of the affairs of Nigeria, I called it and it’s happening already”.
