9th Lagos City Marathon: 15 Refugees, 81 Elites Join Race

9th Lagos City Marathon: 15 Refugees, 81 Elites Race

The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon began today, February 10, 2024, with a two-segment race of 42km and 10km with 15 confirmed refugees and 81 elite participants.

In the 42-kilometer race, the marathon flagged off at 6:30 am on Western Avenue road, Surulere, with a cut-off line at 1:30 pm at Eko Atlantic City, on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.

On the other flag-off race is the 10km marathon, which started at 9:30 am at Grace Garden Events Place, Bisola Durosinmi Etti, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, while the cut line by 1:30 pm at Eko Atlantic, a meeting point with the 42km marathon.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the owners of the Lagos City Marathon, Chief Bukola Olopade, the United Nations has also confirmed the participation of 15 refugee runners among the rich field of runners that will be participating in the marathon.

Meanwhile, over 81 world-class elite runners who are Gold Label athletes have confirmed their participation in the 9th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Among these over 81 elite runners, there are 29 gold-label women runners, which in totality, according to the General Manager of the Lagos City Marathon, Yusuf Ali, has a vibrant and world-class running field with the potential of unearthing a new course record come February 10.

Ali disclosed that the marathon will be used to select qualifiers for the next edition of the Olympic Games, Paris 2024.

However, the Lagos State government had issued a traffic advisory to residents and commuters to utilise alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion.
