Supreme Court Affirms Governor Oborevwori’s Victory in Delta State

401

The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision on Friday upheld the electoral victory of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, dismissing an appeal by the APC candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, challenging the March 18, 2023, governorship election results. Justice Inyang Okoro, delivering the lead judgment, asserted that the appeal lacked merit, as the APC failed to prove substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2023.

The court also rejected Omo-Agege’s concerns about serial numbers on result sheets, emphasizing that their removal wouldn’t alter Oborevwori’s lead margin. This landmark ruling solidifies the legitimacy of Oborevwori’s election, underscoring adherence to electoral processes.

The decision underscores the judiciary’s role in upholding democratic principles, signalling the importance of evidence and compliance in electoral disputes. Governor Oborevwori’s victory stands affirmed, marking a pivotal moment in the legal resolution of electoral controversies.
