Following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho as the head coach of AS Roma, the football club has appointed Daniele De Rossi as the new head coach until June 30, 2024.

The former Roma and Italy midfielder, De Rossi, was announced as the head coach on Tuesday, January 16.

“We are happy to be able to hand over the managerial role of AS Roma to Daniele De Rossi, as we feel that the leadership and ambition that have always defined him can prove decisive in achieving the team’s objectives until the end of the season,” said club owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, in a club statement released on AS Roma’s website.

The 40-year-old manager will be looking to turn the tide for Roma, who currently sit 9th on the Serie A table. They will be playing against visitors Verona on Saturday, January 20.

Describing the task that lies ahead of him, De Rossi said, “The excitement of being able to sit on our bench is indescribable. Everyone knows what Roma means to me. However, the work that awaits us all has already taken precedence.

“We have no time or choice but to be competitive, fight for our goals, and try to achieve them, which are the only priorities my staff and I have set for ourselves.”

De Rossi was previously SPAL’s manager during the 2022/2023 season. He was also part of the Italian national coaching team that saw Italy win the Euro 2020 trophy.

As a player, the Roma legend played 616 matches in 18 years for the Italian side (the second highest for the club), scoring 63 goals during his run. De Rossi made 117 appearances for his country, featuring in eight major international competitions and winning the 2006 World Cup.
