Third Mainland Bridge: FG Announces January 9 Closure for Repair

On Thursday, the federal government announced its planned closure of the Iyana Oworoshonki/Adeniji Adele section of the Third Mainland Bridge, starting from 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024.

The Third Mainland Bridge was constructed in 1990. It is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland; the others are the Eko and Carter bridges. The first phase was commissioned by President Shehu Shagari in 1980 and completed by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990, leaving commuters with 11.8km of road connection for ease of transportation.

However, the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, made the closure known in a statement, saying the closure would be done on the Lagos Island-bound carriageway of the bridge.

She said: “The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, wishes to inform the motoring public that the emergency repairs of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will continue with the closure of the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele section for effective repairs.

“Motorists are further advised to cooperate with traffic management officials deployed to manage traffic and ensure hitch-free movements, in order to minimise discomfort during this repair period. Consequent upon the above, motorists are, hereby, advised to use alternative routes.”

As an awareness disclosure, she urges motorists to be informed of the planned closure on January 9 2024, while urging the public to adhere to traffic rules and regulations as motorists use alternative routes to prevent hardship, even during the repair on the highway.
