Amid Political Turmoil: Attorney General of Rivers State Resigns

197

The Attorney General, who doubles as the Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State, Professor Zaccheus Adangor, has officially tendered his resignation to the state government. He stated in the letter that his resignation was for personal reasons.

The resignation follows the series of controversial events in the state recently a few months after the new administation was officially sworn in.

Adangor, a former cabinet member during Governor Nyesom Wike’s tenure, was re-appointed by Fubara. Speculation previously circulated about his dismissal due to perceived alliances with the Minister of FCT, which the state government refuted.

The state plunged into further crisis as the government demolished the legislative chamber, claiming it was unsafe for habitation following a recent explosion and fire incident. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson defended the demolition on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, amidst the chaos, four lawmakers loyal to Governor Fubara, led by factional Speaker Edison Ehie, held a session at the Government House, Port Harcourt, simultaneous to the demolition of the legislative chamber.

Adding to the turmoil, 27 House members elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) banner defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Their move was triggered by internal party divisions over the National Secretary position, as stated in letters addressed to factional Speaker Martin Amaewhule and read on the House floor.

The political landscape in Rivers State appears increasingly tense, with these recent developments signalling deep-seated divisions within the political corridors of power. As the fallout continues, the state braces itself for further uncertainty amidst the shifting allegiances and discord within its legislative and executive branches.
