The Zamfara State government has successfully reclaimed 50 operational vehicles from the former governor, Bello Matawalle. This follows a legal directive from the Federal High Court in Sokoto, instructing Matawalle to return all official vehicles he possessed.

Despite an initial ultimatum issued in June 2023 for the return of these vehicles, Matawalle refused, prompting the state government to seek court intervention to recover the government properties.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration, committed to advancing the state’s development, diligently executed the retrieval process. Despite Matawalle’s previous denial of holding government property upon leaving office, the vehicles were meticulously recovered from his residences in Gusau and Maradun.

Governor Lawal’s spokesperson, Sani Sambo, emphasized the administration’s dedication to progress, dispelling notions of any witch-hunt or attempt to tarnish reputations, while speaking to the press.

The controversy surrounding missing operational vehicles and alleged misuse of public funds surfaced when Governor Lawal assumed office on May 29, 2023. Security agencies conducted raids on Matawalle’s residences, resulting in the recovery of some vehicles.

Matawalle, currently serving as Nigeria’s Defense Minister under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, had obtained a court order preventing the state government from further actions pending the court’s decision. Ultimately, the court in Sokoto dismissed the former governor’s lawsuit against the state government.
