15 Killed in Midnight Attack on Plateau Community Despite Increased Security Deployment

488

Fifteen people have reportedly been killed in a midnight attack on the Gidan Ado community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday.

The tragic incident occurred just two days after the state police command announced heightened security measures in five local government areas, including Riyom, to ensure peace during the festive season.

The attack, which targeted natives of the Irigwe ethnic group from Bassa Local Government Area, has sent shockwaves through the community.

Sam Jugo, National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Community Development Association (IDA), confirmed the incident on Monday.

Troops from Operation Safe Haven responded to the incident, but unfortunately, the assailants had already caused significant damage before their arrival,” Jugo said.

Operation Safe Haven is a multi-security task force operating in Plateau State to maintain peace in the region.

Jugo also listed the names of those killed in the attack, which include men, women, and children. Among the victims are Dauda Arabo (48), Hassana Wula (52), Basuna Moses (22), Faith Basuna (19), and a toddler, Sheba Ernest, who was just one year old. Other victims were identified as Laraba Randi (18), Danlami Gado (50), Moses Yakubu (48), and Azumi Moses (13), among others.

Linda Moses (32), who sustained severe injuries, is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed location.

It will be recalled that attacks during festive season are not uncommon in Plateau State. Last year, assailants killed no fewer than seventy-six individuals in coordinated attacks on communities within Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

The Transition Implementation Committee Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Monday Kasa, revealed that the attacks extended into Christmas Eve.
