US Ambassador Supports Nairobi for African Grammy Headquarters

294

US Ambassador to Kenya, Margaret ‘Meg’ Whitman, has expressed her support for Kenya to become the headquarters of the African Grammy Awards. The US tech billionaire revealed in an interview with Nairobi News that she would advocate for Kenya among the four African countries proposed for the prestigious position.

Whitman highlighted the significance of the Grammys in the United States and the recent announcement of the African Grammys. She explained that Kenya, along with three other founding countries, is vying to host the headquarters of the African Grammys. She emphasized her preference for Nairobi to win the bid.

Last November, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, organizers of the Grammy Awards, identified regional hubs for future shows, including Abidjan, Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Kigali. This decision reflects the growing global popularity of African music, particularly Afrobeats.

Afrobeats has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity, with Spotify reporting over 550% growth in streams since 2017. The genre is recognized as the fastest-growing on the platform, underscoring its significance in the global music landscape.
