An aircraft that landed at Lungi International Airport without permission on September 19 has been seized, according to the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA).

The private plane, which arrived at 11:54 p.m., was immediately seized by State Security forces.

The 4 passengers on board are now in police custody and under investigation, SLCAA said in a press release published September 20.

The incident raised security concerns among Liberians, but the SLCAA has assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that updates will be provided.

Unapproved flights in Sierra Leone have been associated with drug trafficking and illegal diamond smuggling. The West African country is one of the world’s top diamond-producing countries.
