Hollywood stars Tom Cruise, Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas will be celebrated with honorary Oscars at this year’s Governors Awards on November 16. The event will be held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.

Tom Cruise, renowned for his action-packed roles and support of theatrical movie releases, will receive the Honorary Award for his decades-long dedication to the cinema. Dolly Parton, beloved for her music and massive philanthropic efforts, will be honoured with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her impact beyond the stage and screen.

Joining them are Debbie Allen, a groundbreaking choreographer, actress, and director, and Wynn Thomas, the visionary production designer behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic films. Both will also receive Honorary Awards for their outstanding artistic achievements and service to the film community.

“This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” said Janet Yang, Academy President.

Tom Cruise, who helped bring audiences back to theatres with Top Gun: Maverick during the coronavirus period, is also known for Oscar-nominated performances in Jerry Maguire, Born on the Fourth of July, and Magnolia. His commitment to doing his stunts and preserving the theatrical experience has made him a standout figure in modern cinema.

Dolly Parton’s influence extends far beyond her chart-topping songs and acting roles. Her literacy campaign, the Imagination Library, has given over 285 million books to children worldwide, making her a beacon of generosity and hope.

Debbie Allen has long been a force in dance, TV, and film, opening doors for many artists of colour. Wynn Thomas, the creative mind behind the look of films like Do the Right Thing and Hidden Figures, has left an indelible mark on cinematic storytelling.

The annual Governors Awards, now in its 16th year, recognise individuals whose work and service have left a lasting legacy in the film industry. The awards are presented in partnership with Rolex, the official watch of the Academy.
