Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage is stepping into the world of acting with her debut role in the film “Water & Garri,” slated to premiere on Prime Video on May 10.
Directed by Meji Alabi, the movie follows the journey of Aisha, portrayed by Savage, an ambitious fashion designer returning to her homeland after a decade in the U.S. Faced with escalating violence and tensions, Aisha must navigate her past while confronting her own guilt.
Joining Savage in the cast are Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde, with filming taking place in Cape Coast, Ghana. The film’s executive producers include Savage herself, along with Vannessa Amadi-Ogbonna, Jimi Adesanya, and Meji Alabi. “Water & Garri” will be available for streaming in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Interestingly, “Water & Garri” shares its title with Savage’s five-track EP released in 2021, featuring collaborations with artists like Nas, Rich King, Amaarae, Brandy, and Tay Iwar, earning praise from the likes of Pharrell Williams. Savage’s musical endeavors have seen success, with her last album “Celia” reaching No. 15 on Billboard’s World Albums chart in 2020.
