Tinubu’s Govt Preoccupied with Stifling Dissent, Imposing Death Sentences on Protesters — Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku has condemned the worsening security situation in Nigeria, pointing out that the unrest has even spread to the South as political tensions continue to destabilise the region.

In a post on X, Atiku noted that the devastating violence in Yobe that has claimed numerous lives, along with widespread destruction across villages in Katsina, Sokoto, and other parts of the North-West and North-Central regions, are alarming.

“Amidst these grave challenges, the Federal Government preoccupies itself with stifling dissent, resorting to draconian measures such as imposing death sentences on protesters. The atrocity in Yobe is a stark testament to the failure of the current security framework, demanding immediate and comprehensive reform,” he wrote.

He noted that despite these pressing issues, the government is focusing its efforts on stifling dissent, including the controversial imposition of death sentences on protesters.

He condemned the Tinubu administration’s approach, urging a comprehensive reform of the nation’s security framework.

He expressed deep sorrow for the victims of the Yobe attack and called for a renewed commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians.

It will be recalled that Boko Haram insurgents launched an attack on Mafa village in Yobe State’s Tarmuwa Local Government Area, looting and setting fire to shops and homes.

West Africa Weekly reported that Boko Haram militants attacked the village around 4 p.m. when residents were returning from their farms, killing many villagers and setting homes and shops on fire.

Sources from the community said at least 87 people were killed in the attack, with some bodies still unaccounted for as they died in the bush, and the military could not find them.

Another resident of Mafa reported that about 125 people were killed.
