Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has condemned the brutal killing of Mohamed Ali Kibao, a senior member of the opposition party Chadema. Kibao, 69, was reportedly kidnapped from a bus by suspected security agents while travelling from Dar es Salaam to Tanga. His body was discovered in the Ununio district, showing signs of severe beating and acid burns.

President Samia has ordered an investigation into the murder. In a recent social media post shared on her official page, she emphasised that every citizen has the right to live in a democratic society.

Translated to English, her statement reads: “With great sadness, I have received the news of the murder of CHADEMA leader Mr Mohamed Ali Kibao. I extend my condolences to the leaders of that party, the family of Mr. Kibao, and to his relatives and friends.

“I have instructed investigative agencies to provide me with detailed information about this terrible incident and others like it as soon as possible. Our country is a democracy, and every citizen has the right to live. The government I lead does not tolerate such brutal acts”.

Kibao’s death has raised alarms among opposition figures and human rights groups, who fear there is a crackdown on political activity. Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe expressed concern for the safety of party leaders. Recently also, Chadema leaders were arrested during a banned youth rally.

“We cannot allow our people to continue disappearing or being killed”, Mbowe said.
