Nollywood Scores Big with Multiple Nominations at 2025 Septimius Awards

Nollywood is set to make a strong showing at the 2025 Septimius Awards, with several Nigerian films and series earning multiple nominations ahead of the ceremony scheduled for September 3–4 in Amsterdam.

Leading the pack is Mai Martaba, Nigeria’s official 2025 Oscar selection, which received four nominations: Best African Film, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Produced by Ghali Abdallah Dz and Prince Daniel, the film is a spin-off of the radio drama Kasar Jallaba and tells the story of an ancient kingdom torn apart by a fierce power struggle. The film has not had a cinema release.

The Serpent’s Gift, produced by Winifred Mena-Ajakpovi and directed by Kayode Kasum, earned nods for Best African Film and Best African Actor for Stan Nze’s performance. Written by Stephen Okonkwo and Mr Mett, the drama follows a widow facing accusations and conspiracies after her husband’s mysterious death. The film will premiere in West African cinemas on August 29.

Also making waves is Recall, a Kunle Afolayan production, which landed three nominations: Best Producer, Best African Actress for Sharon Ooja, and Best African Actor for Olarotimi Fakunle. The film tells the emotional story of a man trying to help his wife regain her memory after a sudden loss, only to uncover a disturbing secret.

In the television category, season two of Roberta Orioma’s Grind was nominated for Best Series. The Lagos-set drama follows a young woman who turns to stripping to support her family, exploring themes of survival, ambition, and agency.

Oluseyi Asurf’s 3 Cold Dishes also secured key recognition, with nominations for Best Screenplay and Best African Actress for Osas Ighodaro. Set across four African countries, the revenge thriller tackles the dark realities of human trafficking and vengeance.

Other African talents from across the continent are featured in categories such as Best African Actress, Best African Actor, and Best African Film, with nominees including Nomzamo Mbatha, Lemogang Tsipa, and Adam A. Zango.

The Septimius Awards celebrate excellence in global cinema, spotlighting talent from diverse cultures and storytelling traditions. This year’s nominations highlight Nollywood’s growing global influence and its ability to deliver compelling stories with international appeal.
