344

South Africa’s Johann Rupert and his family have claimed the title of Africa’s top billionaires, surpassing Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote, as per the latest Forbes billionaire ranking. Dangote, who held the prime spot for over 12 years, faced wealth devaluation due to a significant naira devaluation and currency free fall. Currently ranked 201st globally, Rupert’s net worth, along with his family, stands at $10 billion, with investments in luxury goods company Richemont and investment holding company Remgro.

Dangote’s wealth, valued at $9.5 billion, declined by nearly one-third in 2023. Rupert’s wealth has steadily risen since 2020, reaching an all-time high of $11.1 billion in 2023. Rupert, who chairs Richemont, expresses regret over missing the opportunity to acquire 50% of Gucci.

Here are the current top earners:

  1. Johann Rupert & Family: $10.3 billion
  2. Aliko Dangote: $9.5 billion
  3. Nicky Oppenheimer & Family: $8.3 billion
  4. Nassef Sawiris: $7.4 billion
  5. Abdulsamad Rabiu: $5.9 billion
