South African Police Bust Multi-million Dollar Meth Lab, Arrest 4 Including 2 Mexicans

South African police have uncovered an industrial-scale meth lab in one of the country’s largest drug busts, arresting four suspects, including two Mexicans.

According to a police statement, the lab was found on a farm in Groblersdal, a small town in Limpopo province.

Officers seized large quantities of chemicals used to make drugs, including acetone and crystal meth, worth about 2 billion rand ($109.5 million), the statement said.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), South Africa’s geography and international trade links make it a major drug transit country, and it is also a growing market for synthetic drugs.

The U.N. agency noted in its 2023 World Drug Report that Methamphetamine trafficking is particularly on the rise in Africa.

As the investigation continues, the arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, facing charges of manufacturing, dealing, and possessing illicit drugs, the police statement said.

Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that is mainly used as a recreational drug and less commonly as a second-line treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity.

In low to moderate doses, Methamphetamine can improve mood, alertness, concentration, energy, and reduce appetite, promoting weight loss. At very high doses, it can cause psychosis, muscle breakdown, seizures, and brain bleeding.

Chronic high-dose use can lead to severe mood swings, paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behaviour. Recreational use can increase energy and sexual desire significantly. According to reports Methamphetamine has a high risk of addiction and dependence.
