The Grand Théâtre National of Senegal has issued a directive banning the wearing of hair weaves, wigs, and the practice of skin bleaching among its staff.
The internal memo, signed by the Director General Saringe Fall Gueye on July 14, cites the institution’s commitment to upholding and promoting Pan-African values.
In the service note, the management informs all personnel that these aesthetic practices are “strictly prohibited within the administration.”
The measure, which takes immediate effect, aims to preserve the public image of the Grand Théâtre, one of Senegal’s key cultural institutions.
“This measure is intended to preserve the image of the institution, which must promote Pan-African values by one of its missions,” the memo states. The Director General also emphasised the importance of strictly enforcing the decision.

The ban has been distributed to all staff members and relevant administrative departments, including the General Secretariat, Archives, and public postings.
