Public Outcry as MTN Raises Weekly 15GB Data Price from N2,000 to N6,000

Nigerians have criticised MTN Nigeria over a sharp increase in data prices. The cost of a 15GB weekly plan has risen from N2,000 to N6,000, a 200 per cent increase. Many have expressed frustration, saying the hike comes during heightened economic hardship.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently approved tariff increases of up to 50 per cent for telecom operators. It said the decision was necessary to sustain service quality amid rising operational costs. However, consumer rights groups strongly opposed the move.

The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) announced plans to sue the NCC. It warned that the decision adds to the financial burden on Nigerians. NATCOMS President Deolu Ogunbanjo accused the NCC of failing to consult consumers and said the association had recommended a smaller increase of 5 to 10 per cent.

On the other hand, telecom operators had called for higher tariffs, warning that stagnant pricing was unsustainable. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) said without a price review, service quality would continue to decline.

However, the price increase has increased frustrations over poor network quality. Network users have continued to experience significant service disruptions, with many unable to make calls, send messages, or use the internet. Customers have repeatedly complained about poor service. Reports, however, indicate that MTN and Airtel experience nearly 80 fibre cuts daily. Experts say these disruptions are a major cause of network failures.

Another issue is poor investment in telecom infrastructure. Although the recent tariff increase is expected to help, telecom operators warn that improvements will take time. Nigerians now face both higher costs and unreliable service. Many remain doubtful that the price hike will lead to better network quality.
