The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested several high-profile persons, including a member of the State House of Assembly and a former local government chairman, for their involvement in banditry.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dalijan, disclosed this when he hosted Thomas Parker, the officer in charge of the Counterterrorism Unit under the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime (UNODC), at the command headquarters in Gusau, the state’s capital.

However, Dalijan did not disclose the names of the high-profile persons arrested in connection with the crime.

He appealed to the United Nations to help establish a forensic laboratory in the state to address the challenge of conducting forensic analysis in Lagos.

Dalijan also urged the UN to provide Zamfara with the same support as it did in Maiduguri, including training for investigations and establishing forensic labs to speed up the investigation and prosecution of suspects.

He claimed that crime rates in Zamfara have decreased thanks to efforts by security agencies and Community Protection Guards (CPGs) to remove terrorists who migrated from Maiduguri.

Responding, Parker said their visit was in response to Governor Dauda Lawal’s appeal for UN assistance with the state’s security issues.

Parker said the UN is ready to assess the security situation in Zamfara, understand its causes and challenges, and provide support.
