Part-time University Teachers In Senegal To Stage Protests Over Salary, Status

Part-time teachers from Senegal’s public universities have disclosed plans to protest over their demand for improved status and timely payment of salaries. The Rally of Part-Time Teachers of Public Universities in Senegal held a press conference highlighting their grievances.

Mouhamadou Makhtar Diop, a representative for the group, pointed out the long-standing issues part-time teachers face.

“For 40 years, people have given their all to the university but are not treated well,” he stated.

The group plans to hold a large general assembly in Dakar on Saturday, August 3, to protest these injustices and to urge the new authorities to address their concerns.

Diop explained that the semester for the 2022-2023 academic year remains unpaid, and part-time staff lacked any formal status that would ensure job security.

“There is also the issue of status, which does not exist, because the temporary staff body is not governed by any status that ensures security for the members of this body. In 10 years, there has been a recruitment of 400 positions while the number of students is increasing,” he said.

He also noted that over 70% of higher education teaching staff are temporary workers and are not treated fairly. The gathering demands that the new authorities rectify this situation and provide the necessary support and recognition for part-time teachers in Senegalese universities.
