Security agents at the Modibo Keita International Airport in Mali have seized more than 2,418 kilogrammes of cocaine destined for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The operation was carried out by the Anti-Trafficking Airport Cell (CAAT), according to the Central Office for the Fight against Illicit Enrichment (OCS).

The security operatives intercepted the drugs during a routine check at the airport’s cargo service. The cocaine was hidden in the false bottom of handbags and had been declared as luggage containing clothes.

It was also revealed that the package was set to travel through Paris before reaching its final destination, Jeddah.

Malian authorities are carrying out investigations to identify the perpetrators of the trafficking operation.

This recent cocaine interception in Mali is not too far from the 2,633kg of cocaine that was intercepted in Guinea-Bissau early last September. The Guinea-Bissau drug bust was the largest in the country’s history.

In recent times, West Africa Weekly have reported several drug busts in the West African region which altogether highlight a worrying increase of drug trafficking in West Africa.
