The Kwara State High Court has sentenced five suspects involved in the infamous Offa robbery of April 2018 to death by hanging.

The convicts were found guilty of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and culpable homicide.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Haleemah Salman ruled that all evidence presented by the prosecution clearly implicated the suspects in the gruesome robbery that claimed multiple lives.

The robbery reported as one of the deadliest in Nigeria, left a trail of death and destruction at multiple banks and public spaces.

In addition to the death sentence for armed robbery and homicide, the court handed down a three-year prison term for illegal possession of firearms.

Briefing reporters after the ruling, the prosecution counsel expressed satisfaction with the verdict, explaining that the delay in reaching a conclusion was partly due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the judge’s national assignments.

However, a representative of the defence counsel told reporters that the ruling would be appealed.
