Nigeria’s Former Vice President, Atiku Dumps PDP After Opposition Coalition Flag‑Off

1k

Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), delivering a formal resignation letter on July 14 to his local ward chairman in Jada, Adamawa State.

In the letter, Atiku expressed profound gratitude for his years of service and acknowledged the heartbreak of leaving the party he helped build.

He cited a misalignment between the PDP’s current direction and its original principles as the impetus for his departure.

This development follows Atiku’s role in the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Just weeks ago, he joined other notable opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Nasir El‑Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and former Senate President David Mark, in flag‑off ceremonies unveiling the ADC as a united platform to challenge Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress in the 2027 election.

Atiku has been the presidential candidate of the PDP more times than any other individual. His persistent candidacy runs up to the 2023 presidential election.
