Nigeria’s House of Representatives has called on all levels of government to ban the sale of alcohol and illicit drugs in and around motor parks across Nigeria. The lawmakers argue that easy access to these substances contributes to road accidents and endangers passenger safety.
Rep. Abbas Adigun of Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, Oyo State, proposed the motion on Thursday. He noted that drivers often consume alcohol and drugs before trips. This use of substances impairs their judgment, coordination, and vision. As a result, it leads to fatal accidents. Adigun cited data from the Federal Road Safety Commission, showing that substance use is linked to around 90 per cent of road accidents.
His words: The consumption of psychoactive drugs and alcohol increases the risk of motor accidents, leading to loss of driving coordination, poor judgement, poor vision and consequently loss of life and property.
We are worried that motor parks have become sale points of alcohol and illicit drugs where drivers, before take-off, consume these substances thereby endangering the lives of passengers. We are also worried that alcoholic beverages are freely available and openly displayed at motor parks except for narcotic drugs that are traded and consumed clandestinely” he added.
The House recommended that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) conduct random tests at motor parks. Additionally, lawmakers urged private park owners to discourage alcohol sales and requested the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to monitor parks. They advocated for the arrest of violators to ensure compliance.
