Nigeria Jumps 14 Places in FIFA Ranking, Now Africa’s Third

Nigeria are three-time AFCON Champions.

In the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking released on Feb. 15, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have made a significant leap, now ranking 28th in the world after climbing 14 spots from their previous 42nd position.

This jump places Nigeria as the third-highest ranked African men’s national football team, trailing only behind Morocco (12th) and Senegal (17th), with Egypt (36th) and Cote d’Ivoire (39th) also in the top five.

The rise in ranking follows the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday, Feb. 11, where Nigeria emerged finalists, losing to Champions, Cote d’Ivoire.

This improvement for the Super Eagles also saw them moving up from sixth to third place in the African continent rankings.

FIFA rank teams based on how they perform in all the international matches the football body recognises, using a special system to give points.
