Nigeria: 27 People Killed in Fresh Attack on Plateau Community

67

At least 27 farmers, including men, women, and children have been killed in a brutal attack by gunmen in Bindi-Jebbu village, part of the Tahoss community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The deadly assault, which occurred between 4:00 am and 6:00 am on Monday, left many others seriously injured. Victims were rushed to hospitals, including Jos University Teaching Hospital and Plateau Specialist Hospital.

While local authorities and security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the casualties, the Chairman of Riyom LGA, Bature Sati Shuwa, confirmed the attack but said he could not provide specific figures as he was en route to the affected community.

The National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Dalyop Solomon, confirmed the deaths to reporters on Tuesday. According to Solomon, the gunmen, suspected to be from Fulani ethnic groups, stormed the village, firing indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze.

Twenty-seven persons were killed and many were injured. We have taken the bodies to different hospitals before the burial,” Solomon stated, adding that arrangements for a mass burial are underway.

In a joint statement later issued by the Berom Youth Moulders Association’s Secretary General, Bature Iliya Adazaram, and National President Solomon Dalyop, the group condemned the attack, blaming it on armed Fulani elements allegedly from Bangai-Fulani, Ganawuri, and surrounding areas.

The association expressed anger over what it described as the complicity of security agents, alleging that a reinforcement team failed to take action, despite prior knowledge of the planned attack.

What happened in Jebu this morning is the usual Fulani crime against humanity, deliberately carried out under the watch of some security agents who are said to have been compromised by colluding with the attackers,” the statement reads in part.

In an on-ground report by News Central, the reporter who not hold back her tears decried the brutality of the attack. The recent killing is coming weeks after at least 50 people were killed in a wave of violent attacks carried out by armed militia in Plateau and Benue States, triggering fear, destruction, and displacement in affected communities.
