The much-anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated hit, “Moana 2”, propels audiences three years forward into the adventures in her life. The recently released trailer provides a first look at Moana, who is now both a seasoned leader and an older sister, as she embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the lost island of Motufetu, a once-vibrant land now obscured by the wrath of a jealous God of Storms.
The sequel introduces Simea, Moana’s three-year-old sister, who is portrayed as the film’s emotional heart. Moana, fully embracing her role as a protector, is seen guiding Simea while confronting the daunting responsibilities that come with her leadership of both land and sea. Auli’i Cravalho, who reprises her role as Moana, previously shared that Simea has become the centre of Moana’s world, indicating that the sisterly bond will play a crucial role in the unfolding narrative.
The trailer teases a new, formidable villain whose mysterious presence is marked by an ominous purple glow and an army of bats. The unknown enemy delivers a chilling threat to Moana and Maui; the demigod voiced again by Dwayne Johnson. This sets the stage for what appears to be an epic battle as Moana seeks to protect her people from this emerging danger.
The original “Moana” was a massive success, earning over $680 million globally. The film also received critical acclaim, securing two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the chart-topping “How Far I’ll Go.”
Notably, “Moana 2” will stand apart from Disney’s ongoing live-action remake of the original film, seeing Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho returning in their iconic roles.
