President Bola Tinubu has reprimanded the Organised Labour as well as Nigerians as a whole to cut their coat according to their size, announcing that he will only approve a new minimum wage that aligns with the government’s financial capacity.

He made this statement on Wednesday during a dinner in Abuja, commemorating Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.

Tinubu said that an Executive Bill regarding the new minimum wage would soon be presented to them.

The minimum wage will be what Nigerians can afford, what you can, and what I can afford. Cut your coat according to your size, if you have size at all, he said.

This reprimand comes a week after negotiations between Labour and the government disagreed on a new minimum wage.

Labour reduced its demand from ₦494,000 to ₦250,000, while the government increased its offer from ₦60,000 to ₦62,000.

Both parties have submitted their reports to the President, who is expected to make a final decision and send an executive bill to the National Assembly to establish a new minimum wage law.
