Malian Customs have seized 19 passenger buses found to be operating with fake number plates and forged registration documents.

The operation was carried out by the Directorate of Intelligence and Anti-Fraud (DRLF) officers, following targeted intelligence. The buses belonging to a local transport company were reportedly plying various routes illegally across the country.

According to customs officials, the vehicles used counterfeit logbooks and false number plates, which were grave breaches of Mali’s customs and administrative regulations. Initial findings suggest the suspected fleet owner is a citizen of a neighbouring country, giving the case a cross-border angle that may point to a wider fraud network.

The Director General of Customs has said anti-fraud efforts are top priorities. Authorities say the success of the latest operation reflects growing efficiency within the DRLF, backed by modern intelligence methods and constant surveillance.

Judicial proceedings are underway to identify all those involved, including possible accomplices inside and outside the country. This is one of the largest seizures by Malian Customs in recent years and comes as part of the country’s reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability. Officials say the move sends a strong message to fraudsters and helps ensure fair competition among legitimate transport operators.

Vehicle fraud and smuggling remain major issues across West Africa. Mali’s Customs Service is increasing collaboration with regional partners to tackle these cross-border threats.
