Liberia Condemns Attacks Of Its Ships By Yemen Houthi Rebels On Red Sea

Liberia has condemned attacks on its ships in the Red Sea by Yemeni Houthi rebels.

During his speech at the 132nd session of the Council of International Maritime Organisation (IMO) going on in London (July 8-12), the commissioner of Liberia Maritime Authority, Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., mentioned the attack on the Liberian-flagged vessel MV TUTOR on June 12, 2024.

Lighe informed the Council that the Houthis used a surface vessel with no crew to strike the port side of MV TUTOR’s engine room. This was followed by a second attack using an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) on the starboard side, causing the engine room to flood and the vessel to lose power and drift.

The vessel eventually sank, and one crew member is still missing.

Lighe thanked the navies of France and the United States for rescuing the MV TUTOR crew during the attack. He expressed Liberia’s gratitude for their assistance and reiterated the call to end the attacks on vessels involved in international trade.

He further urged all nations to condemn these attacks and work together to ensure the safety and security of ships and seafarers, which he said is essential to sustaining maritime trade globally.
