Jacob Zuma, South Africa’s former president, has emerged as a contender in the upcoming elections. He is challenging his former party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

Zuma, who served as the nation’s fourth president from 2009 to 2018, was forced out of office amid a wave of corruption allegations.

Zuma’s political resurgence comes amidst a backdrop of legal battles and controversy with trial on multiple corruption charges.

His brief imprisonment in 2021 for contempt of court, followed by a contentious release on health grounds, drew widespread attention and sparked unrest, resulting in over 350 deaths, the deadliest violence in post-apartheid South Africa.

Despite his legal woes, Zuma has aligned himself with the radical uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, invoking the legacy of the ANC’s armed wing during the struggle against apartheid.

With recent polls indicating a potential shift in power dynamics, Zuma’s party poses a significant challenge to the ANC’s decades-long dominance, potentially fracturing its absolute majority and necessitating coalition governance.

Zuma’s return to the political spotlight has been marked by fiery rhetoric, denouncing his former party and urging supporters to “take back the country.”

A divisive figure known for his charisma and populist appeal, Zuma’s influence within the political landscape remains formidable despite his legal entanglements.

From his tenure as head of intelligence during apartheid to his incarceration alongside Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, Zuma’s legacy is marred by a litany of legal scandals.

Allegations of embezzlement, bribery and corruption have dogged his political career, culminating in a damning 2022 report implicating him in state corruption.
