At least 13 farmers were killed by terrorists while working on their farms near Ijuwa, close to the Alawa community in Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.

Akilu Isyaku, the LGA Chairman, confirmed the incident during a radio interview in Minna on Wednesday. He stated that nine of the farmers were shot dead, while four others were killed at a separate location on the same day.

Reports suggest that the attack might have been in retaliation by the terrorists, who believed the community was giving security agencies information about their activities.

Niger State’s Acting Governor, Yakubu Garba, condemned the attack, describing it as “satanic and callous.”

Earlier in March, terrorists kidnapped more than 20 women during an attack on a market in the Madaka community, Rafi LGA, also in Niger State.

This latest incident adds to a growing and alarming violence mainly targeting rural communities in northern Nigeria as a whole, causing many farmers to abandon their farms due to fear of further attacks. This has severely worsened agricultural productivity and exacerbated the country’s food security crisis.

While the federal and state governments have in words consistently condemned the actions of these terrorists, no real action has been taken toward putting an end to the ongoing attacks and insecurity plaguing the nation.
