Ghana To Introduce VAR In Premier League, GFA President Says

534

The president of Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has revealed plans to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League.

He made this known during a press meeting in Sunyani, Ghana.

“We are going to introduce VAR into our football. Whatever we need to do to bring VAR into the league, we will,” he declared.

However, Okraku did not mention the date the VAR will be introduced. The GFA is looking to explore cost-effective VAR technology that suits Ghana’s economic realities.

The adoption of VAR technology is expected to tackle the officiating inconsistencies in the local league.

VAR has been used on some occasions in Ghana: during the Ghanaians’ 2022 World Cup qualifiers match against Nigeria at Baba Yara Stadium and during Dream FC CAF Confederation Cup knockout matches last season.

Morocco became the first African country to introduce VAR in its national football league in 2020. Tanzania announced that VAR would be introduced into their league from next season, likewise Côte d’Ivoire.
