Germany Completes Military Withdrawal from Niger

316

Germany has officially withdrawn its military forces from Niger, completing the evacuation process on Friday morning.

The withdrawal marks the end of Germany’s military presence in Niger, where its forces were stationed at Transport Air Base 101 in Niamey, the country’s capital.

The decision to close the German airbase in Niamey came after unsuccessful negotiations between the two countries. The base, a military transportation centre, was expected to be closed by August 31.

The departure ceremony on Thursday included senior military officials from both countries. They signed the final documents and conducted a final inventory.

The German army’s departure from Niger follows the withdrawal of French troops from Niger in December 2023. The United States is expected to completely withdraw from the West African country by September 15, signalling Niger’s continuous turn away from Western relations.
